Power and IBM i Roadmap - Steve Fier, IBM Steve Fier

Steve will review IBM announcements since last June's meeting. These will include updates to IBM i and Power Systems servers, and new storage products. How are customers using new capabilities like Solid State Drives or DB2 enhancements to be more productive?

IBM PureSystems - Tom Capasso, IBM

Tom will review the April 2012 IBM announcement of IBM PureSystems. These new servers run IBM i, AIX, Linux and Windows on Power and Intel processors. They offer "Integration by design" and "A simplified experience". Sound familiar? Learn how IBM PureSystems complement (but do not replace) traditional Power Systems servers. (See also Steve Will's blog entry at http://ibmsystemsmag.blogs.com/you_and_i/2012/04/ibm-puresystems-and-ibm-i.html)

High Availability - Go Local or Go Cloud? - Simon O'Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Maxava

2011 was the most expensive year in history for Natural Disasters. IT Managers are under pressure to backup more data and if disaster strikes - data loss is not an option! IBM i sites worldwide are changing the way they look at Disaster Recovery and High Availability. Tape backups no longer provide the protection that most modern businesses demand - recovery times are just too long and the recovery points can lead to lost data. The problem is that alternative solutions seem too expensive or too complicated. Is the emergence of Cloud DR the game changer? Simon O'Sullivan of Maxava will outline the latest DR & HA options open to IBM i sites

Google Apps and your IBM i - David Andruchuk, CSDA, inc David Andruchuk

Google Apps is a suite of products that lets you create different kinds of online documents, work on them in real time with other people, and store your documents and your other files -- all online, and all for free. With any device with an Internet connection, you can access documents and files from any computer, anywhere in the world as can your employees, your clients or your vendors. This presentation will give you an overview of the many possibilities of what you can do using Google Apps and your IBM i DB2 data. The possibilities are endless for using Google Apps such as using a Google spreadsheet for physical inventories, using a Google calendar to publish manufacturing date schedules or Employee vacations or birth dates and even distributing reports as PDF in Google documents.

What we will be covering:

  • Learn about what Google Apps are and how they can benefit an IBM i shop
  • Learn how DB2 table data can be converted to use as a Google spreadsheet
  • Learn how to convert an IBM i report to a PDF and publish as a Google document
  • Learn how to convert DB2 table date data to publish as a Google calendar

A great success! A wonderful turnout!

This year we did a lot of things differently and it paid off. Was it the new venue at IBM? The speakers and sessions? The iPad drawing? Hopefully as we tally the evaluations and the survey, we'll know more.
Thank you to everyone who came and showed their support!
Thank you to all the speakers for donatating their time and expertise!

And the winner of the iPad 2 is:
Lou Langevin from Vermont Information Processing (VIP)
